| Why is my Dell Dimension or OptiPlex system unable to recognize my hard drive or CD drive? |
Troubleshooting Steps
For information on clearing NVRAM on your Dell Dimension or Dell OptiPlex computer, refer to Dell Knowledge Base Article:
Step One: Find your System Documentation To locate information on how to remove the Cover and details specific to working in your system perform the following steps:
When you get the Cover removed, continue to the next step. Information
on CD/DVD and hard drive removal and their locations in your system are also
available in your system information page. This step will make sure the electrical connections made by the Data Cables are intact. Click for information regarding IDE data cables. To view a scenario using these data cable troubleshooting steps, click
here.
Using the information gathered from steps three and four, you will be able to determine if a drive, one of the IDE data cables, or one of the IDE channels on the main system board might be defective. Click to view an example scenario about data cable troubleshooting Checking the Power Cables

There are essentially three reasons that a drive might fail to function:

Drive Detection/Recognition
IDE Drive Essentials
Drives in your computer are detected by the BIOS as a general class of hardware known as "IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) Devices." Among many other things, the BIOS of your computer regulates two IDE
"channels." The two IDE channels correspond to the two IDE connectors on
the main system board. The IDE connectors on the main system board are almost always
labeled PRI (primary) and SEC (secondary).
IDE Data Cable Basics Data transfer between IDE devices and the main system board depends on IDE Cables, commonly referred to as "ribbon cables". Except for some specialized cables, most ribbon cables have three connectors. One of the ribbon cable connectors attaches to the main system board. If one of the ribbon cable connectors is blue, the blue connector must be connected to the main system board for proper operation of the attached hard drive.
Jumper Settings Basics Jumper settings on IDE drives work in conjunction with the position of the drive on the ribbon cable. The position of the jumper dictates the designation of the drive. In some cases, the jumper is required to "force" its drive to assume Drive 0 (Master) or Drive 1 (Slave) designations. There are three possible jumper settings:
Typically, there are markings near the jumper bank on the drive that indicates jumper positions. Drive designations are commonly abbreviated as MA (Master), SL (Slave) and CS (Cable Select). Most Dell computer systems are set in the Cable Select jumper position. Normally, drives configured as Cable Select drives will automatically assume the Master/Slave designation determined by the position of the drive in the ribbon cable (see the NOTE under IDE Data Cable Basics). Important: If a drive is jumpered in the "Slave" position, it will not function unless there is a drive which is jumpered to "Master" on the same IDE channel. 12-0-2: How do I troubleshoot a DVD-ROM drive that does not play or read DVD media (TT1023433)
| How do I troubleshoot a DVD-ROM drive that does not play or read my DVDs? |
Overview Please adhere to the following guidelines while troubleshooting your DVD-ROM drive:
To verify the basic function of your DVD-ROM drive, perform the following steps:
If you are unable to explore the DVD disc in Windows, perform the following steps:
If the DVD drive does not read the disc (display the directory contents), try other discs. Ensure that the discs are inserted properly. If the drive will read in DOS, but not in Windows, refer to Dell Knowledge Base Article:
If you are able to read the DVD media, it is very unlikely that the DVD-ROM drive is the cause of the DVD problem. The problem is probably software related (although, if you are using a hardware DVD decoder, this device may also be a possibility). Typical steps for troubleshooting DVD include: verifying your display settings, cleaning out the Windows® startup environment, and reloading the DVD decoding or video adapter software. Search support.dell.com for more information on these topics. It may also be useful to search for software updates for your decoding software or video adapter at support.dell.com. File Download
This article provides steps to test the basic functionality of the DVD drive (data-reading). Although drive failure is uncommon, the DVD drive should be tested in the event that a problem arises while playing DVD media in order to rule out the drive as the cause of the problem. When you play DVD media, there are two distinct operations occurring. One is the reading of the data off the DVD disc, which is the function of the DVD-ROM drive. The other operation is the data decoding process, which is carried out by decoding software or a separate hardware data-decoding device. This document provides steps to test the basic function of the DVD-ROM drive (data-reading). Although it rarely fails, the DVD drive should be tested in the event that a problem arises while playing DVD media in order to rule out the drive as the cause of the problem. |

12-0-3: How to Test CD-ROM, DVD, CD/RW on Hardware level (3 articles from Dell )
1) To test the drive you will need your Windows CD and CDROM boot diskette. You can download a CDROM boot disk from our web site to use. From the Dell Download page search for and download the file DIAGFT32.EXE - once this file is downloaded, run the file and it will extract to a floppy disk to create a CDROM bootable floppy disk.
Put both of these (floppy disk & CD) in the drives with the CD in the DVD drive and restart your system. At the startup menu, pick the option to start with CDROM support. This will boot the system to an A:\ prompt and try to load the CDROM drivers; it should tell you what drive letter it assigns to the CDROM drives, usually D: and E:. From the A: prompt, type in D: (or what ever drive letter was assigned to the DVD drive) and then press ENTER. Next type in DIR and press enter. If it gives you a directory of files, then the DVD ROM drive is mechanically working and you will need to trouble-shoot the software on the system. If you get some sort of error message, then you will need to do hardware trouble-shooting on the CDROM drive.
If the drive does not read when you boot from the floppy disk, the next thing to try is Clearing the NVRAM and reseating (unplugging and reconnecting) the data cable (wide grey ribbon cable) for the CDROM at both ends before repeating the test above. If the drive is still not reading, you will want to contact Dell technical support as the drive may need to be replaced (if you are under warranty).
2) Run the Diagnostic with the Resource CD per Dell-ChrisM:
* Insert the Dimension Drivers and Utilities Resource CD into the top CD drive
* Close any boxes that open
* Insert any non-burned data CD into the lower CD drive
* Close any boxes that open
* Click Click Start- Turn Off Computer- Restart
* Tap F12 to enter the Boot Menu
* Press 5 IDE CD-ROM DEVICE [press Enter]
* Press 2 Boot from CD-ROM [press Enter]
* Choose the Diagnostics listed for your Dimension system type
* Clicking Express Test will check all the hardware
* If you just want to check a specific hardware item, click "Custom Test"
* Click (for example) CDROM/DVD
* Click the Run Test button
3) Per Dell Tech ~ from Maizeblue:
These are the steps that Dell support took me through:
Insert a movie to your dvd drive. (if it starts to play, then just exit)
[If this does not work, use a CD data disc instead of a DVD movie]
Reboot your system with the disc in the dvd player.
When you see the Dell logo screen, press F12 (this will take you to the Boot Device
Menu)
Arrow down to Utility Partition. (this will bring up the Hardware Diagnostic screen)
Select "Custom Test" (all the devices will be on the left)
Click the + sign next to cdrom/dvd
Select the drive that you want to test.
Hit "Run Tests" at the bottom left
The test might pause, but just wait until it finishes completely. This usually takes about
10-20 minutes and will give you any errors.
Post the error messages on the fourm.

12-0-6: Why do I not hear any sound when I play a DVD movie? FA1017282 (Care of ~ micmaxe)
| Why do I not hear any sound when I play a DVD movie? |
Discussion General configuration for all sound cards DVD Control Panel Settings With the latest version of the Dell DVD player, there is the ability to play sound through a decoder card digital out jack (also known as S/PDIF). Unless your speakers and sound system are configured to support this feature, the S/PDIF option must be disabled. To disable the S/PDIF setting, left-click on the "S/PDIF" bottom in the DVD "Panel Control." You can consult Dell Online Technical Information to determine if your speakers have digital capabilities. To do this: browse to http://support.dell.com/us/en/home.asp, click Reference, click User's Guides, click Accessory, and then click Speaker. You can access the DVD control panel by starting the "DVD Player." Click on START | PROGRAMS | DVD PLAYER. Then right-click the DVD window. On the menu that appears, left-click on the option for "Panel Control." The following set of controls will appear on your screen: (Figure 1)
NOTE: the S/PDIF button is enabled in this picture. Sound Mixer Settings Ensure the "Auxiliary Input" option (Figure 2) is
selected or not muted in your mixer control panel. You can access the native Window mixer
controls by following these steps:
NOTE: The above mixer will be shown if you have a Sound Blaster® card installed. Some of these selections, such as the Microphone and Auxiliary, have already been added manually. Your mixer may have different settings for the mute option depending upon the sound card with your system. If there is not a listing for "Auxiliary" when the mixer control panel opens, left-click on "Options" and select "Properties" from the menu that appears. A new window will appear and, under the section entitled "Show the following volume controls", scroll down the list of available devices and place a check in the box for "Auxiliary." Once you have marked your selections, click on the "OK" button and they will be added to the mixer control panel. Configuration specific to Sound Blaster Live Value! sound cards Speakers with digital audio capabilities If you have speakers with digital audio (S/PDIF) connections, such as the ADA-880 speakers, you should enable the "S/PDIF" feature, in the DVD Panel Control, only while playing your DVD title. Some selections on volume control cannot be unmuted While attempting to unmute the "Auxiliary" option in your "Mixer Control," you may notice that other options adjacent to the "Auxiliary" become muted. When attempting to unmute these options, other options become muted. The result will be that one or more categories will always be muted. The file MUTE-FIX.EXE patch is available to correct this problem. To download the patch, perform the folowing steps:

12-0-9: How do I find my system configuration or specs on the Dell Web page?
Question:
How do I find my system configuration or specs on the Dell Web page?
Answer:
It is best you have a service tag number for the system you need the
configuration information for. You can still get the system configuration without
a service tag number, but you need to have access to the system.
Procedure 1: (You have access to the service tag number or the actual system)
Log on to the system you need the configuration information for.
Go to http://www.support.dell.com
Put in your service tag number, or pick a system from the "Product/System Type"
drop down menu.
Then click on "Sign in to standard support"
On the next screen click on "Configuration"
Then click on "Yes I Agree"
Your system will be scanned for its hardware configuration and it should be shown to you.
Procedure 2: (You have access to the service tag number, but not the actual system)
Go to http://www.support.dell.com
On the left hand side, under "My Account" click on "Log In"
If you have not already created an account, put in your information and click on
"Create an Account".
Then fill out the rest of the requested information and click on "Create
Account"
Once you have done that, go back to the main support web page and click on "Log
In"
Put in your e-mail address and password, and click on "Log into my account".
Once you have logged in, click on the "Warranty" button on the left hand side.
Then click on "System as shipped new" to get the system configuration.
-Note: To check on another system tag do the following:
Click on "Manage my systems"
Enter the new service tag number and click "Submit"
Click the radio button next to the new service tag number.
Click on "Warranty" on the left hand side.
Then click on "System as shipped new" to get the configuration info
