13-0-11: Sonic`s Solutions for Burning Issues
Here is an article from the Sonic Solutions Knowledge Base that addresses many of these basic issues. While it seems you have been through nearly all of these steps, I'm putting this up for as a step by step for everybody here as well:
Title
Solutions for Burning issues
Description
Burning
Symptom
When trying to burn a variety of errors can pop up. Included,
but not limited to, are "Device Error- Sense Code (x xx x)", "Unknown
Device Error", "Invalid Media Error", "DVDErr, -xxxxxx" and
"OSErr, -xxxx" to name a few.
Solution
The majority of these writing errors can be resolved within
the first 5 steps.
1) Update your drive's firmware/drivers. Most companies regularly update their firmware
and drivers. Some as often as once month. Some never. The Sonic Knowledge Base has a solid
assortment of DVD burner drivers and firmware links. To keep this article simple, we are
recommending that you search for your firmware by entering your DVD burner's
manufacturer's name in the Sonic KB. If you do not find your firmware, please contact the
manufacturer via phone or their website.
2) Update your ASPI. ASPI allows efficient communication between internally connected
drives/devices. This lack of efficient communication can cause the data not to be speedily
transferred from the hard drive to your burner causing buffer issues, and then generating
an error. Even if you have a burner connected via USB or firewire, this is highly
recommended for the internal hard drives for optimal speed. The links to update ASPI are
located below and are separated by the operating system best suited for their versions.
3) Enable DMA. Drive Memory Access also enables better efficiency of data to go from hard
drive to hard drive or hard drive to burner. Instructions on enabling DMA are linked
below.
4) The media itself. Are you using the correct media for your drive? Example, are you
using -R media when your burner only uses +RW? A very common error among users. Also, make
sure that you are using the branded media recommended by the manufacturer. Generic or
"cheap" media has been known to cause a fair share of wasted discs and money for
Sonic users.
5) If you are using an external burner, try utilizing the firewire port instead of a the
USB port. The reason being is that while many burners and USB ports may be USB 2.0, they
may not be Hi-Speed USB 2.0. USB 2.0 is roughly the same speed as the original USB 1.0
standard where Hi-Speed has a slightly faster transfer rate than firewire. If your USB
port or the burner has regular USB 2.0 or USB 1.0, it may not have enough data bandwidth
to successfully burn the large amounts of data that a DVD requires. Rather than check your
burner and your card (which will be very difficult to determine unless you kept the boxes
when you bought them). It's better just to use firewire. For more info on USB
specifications, please visit: http://www.usb.org/home
6) If you are still skeptical as to the source of the issue, the best way to isolate if
the error is being generated by the burner, our software, or your computer, try building
the session to the hard drive. This will eliminate the burner from the equation of the
error. If the session builds to your hard drive without issue, then it is a burner related
issue. If not, you most likely receive a different error. Consult the Sonic Knowledge base
for the error and if it doesn't exist, contact Sonic Support. Instructions to build to
your hard drive are listed below.

13-0-23: Clean Install for MyDVD 5 and higher (Sonic`s KB ~ Care of Bpa)
Description Launching Program/Saved Project Symptom A good trouble shooting step for application errors when launching, accessing files and hardware, and other issues that may arise where the installation of MyDVD may have been compromised. Solution
Doing a clean install for MyDVD (and other Sonic products) requires removing certain key components that are usually left behind from the uninstaller. These items are user preferences for your Sonic software such as track lists, project types (not to be confused with the projects themselves), and other items for your application's configuration. These will be eliminated during the clean install process.
Back up all of your projects and source files and keep note of where they were as you may have to place them back in the same file path to make your session work. Sonic recommends that you save your projects and source files in separate folders outside of the application's root folder to prevent complications when a clean install is required.
If these steps do not work, then you will have to perform a complete removal of all Sonic components and software. To do this, complete these steps:
If you have further problems, please contact Sonic Support.

13-0-27: How do I install or uninstall the Update Manger?
Quote from InstallShield:
The Update Service is a tool that InstallShield sells to software vendors that is designed to help you keep your software up-to-date. Keeping your software updated has many benefits, but InstallShield recommends that software vendors build in an option to disable automatic update checking. If you are using an application that uses the Update Service, your application may have a configuration option to disable update checking. Please check your applications menu options.
If your application does not have this option, InstallShield has created a tool called the Update Manager that can disable automatic update checking. The Update Manager utility lists all applications currently using Update Service on your computer and the Update Service's status with that application.

13-0-30: Clean Uninstall / Reinstall of PowerDVD.
I do not totally agree with all of #6 and (d) 2 but that is just my opinion....
This is from CyberLink Support.
(1) Please uninstall PowerDVD (by following steps)
(a) Start --> Programs --> Cyberlink PowerDVD (uninstall it). Check the registry for any existing PowerDVD keys and delete them using steps (b) and (c).
(b) Start --> Run ( keyin ""regedit"" ) --> HKEY_Current_User --> Software --> Cyberlink --> PowerDVD and/or PDVD (delete the folder)
(c) Start --> Run ( keyin ""regedit"" ) --> HKEY_Local_Machine --> Software --> Cyberlink --> PowerDVD and/or PDVD (delete the folder).
(d) Search and delete folder named Cyberlink and PowerDVD, if exists. Restart your system.
(2) Update VGA and Sound card driver. Contact your computer manufacturer to get the updates. {Optional in my opinion}
Reset your display settings, screen area to 1024 x 768, color depth to 16 bit and monitor refresh rate to 60 HZ. {Optional in my opinion}
(3) Install PowerDVD program
(4) Please install latest patch for PowerDVD software:
You need to jump over to their support site, may have to be registered. (5) Upgrade to
DirectX 9.0c driver http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en&categor
(6) To avoid any compatibility issues, please close all other software and utility
applications including virus scans,spyware, screen saver and instant messaging software,{UNINSTALL
ANTI-SPYWARE installed on your system,}
I find that a little too much, closing them should work OK
close any popup blocker installed before you launch PowerDVD.
