8-4-7: Dell systems: Autodetect/ATA mode. (care of uses_9200)
ok, i did some wikipeding and googling ;-) for this topic... and that's what I found
out:
1. SATA "per se" does not use the master/slave concept
2. You can switch the controllers to "IDE emulation" mode. For Dells, this is
done in the BIOS by selecting the "Autodetect/ATA" mode - so that older OS like
XP can be installed w/o additional driver disks.
3. In emulation mode, the SATA controllers emulate master/slave **internally** for each of
their SATA-connector-pairs, so two SATA connectors belong to a single emulated IDE
channel. In this mode, a slow optical drive as a slave *slows down* a master harddisk on
the same channel.
4. Why does Dell ship the 9200 configured in that "bad" way? Simply because
normally the installed Vista uses native SATA drivers => no emulation => no
masters/slaves => no slowdown of the harddisk, and it does not matter which SATA ports
are used.
Conclusion: If you are using "Autodetect/ATA" mode, be sure to have no drive as
a "slave" drive. You can try this out by plugging the drives in different SATA
ports (comp switched off of course!) and afterwards examine where they are located in XP's
device manager. There are three emulated IDE channels available, so in this configuration
you are restricted to three drives (hdd, optical, ...) if you don't want to have serious
slowdowns. Hope that helps as a tip...
